The International Languages Instructor (ILI) Certificate and Diploma is a specialized professional development program designed for educators who teach heritage and international languages within school boards. These programs support multiculturalism by enabling children and youth to maintain and develop their home or ancestral languages. Unlike ESL programs, which focus on English language acquisition, International Language programs focus on teaching languages such as Spanish, Mandarin, Arabic, Ukrainian, Italian, Portuguese, Punjabi, and others within K–12 settings.

The ILI program provides a universal pedagogical framework that can be applied to the teaching of any international language. Drawing from established research in second language acquisition and second language acquisition–informed methodologies, the program equips instructors with evidence-based strategies that transfer across languages and grade levels. Participants learn how to design engaging, developmentally appropriate instruction for K–8 and secondary learners, manage multilingual classrooms, assess language proficiency, integrate culture meaningfully, and uphold professional standards within school board environments.

This session provides a comprehensive foundation for educators preparing to teach in International Language programs. Participants explore the evolving role of the International Language Instructor and the key principles of first- and second-language acquisition. The session examines developmental considerations for both K–8 and secondary learners, highlighting how instructional approaches must shift to reflect age, cognitive readiness, and linguistic proficiency. Emphasis is placed on practical, research-informed instructional strategies that promote engagement, language development, and cultural responsiveness across grade levels. By integrating theory with classroom application, this session prepares educators to apply the knowledge and tools needed to design supportive, inclusive, and developmentally appropriate language learning environments.
